Ancient records called it “the scent that outshines gold”: a single piece of Hainan oud was once worth its weight in silver, and it was offered as tribute to the imperial court, dynasty after dynasty.

Song-dynasty scholars ranked Hainan's oud above all others — “the crown of the world” — and the poet Su Shi, who lived his final years on the island, described its character as “golden in strength, jade-like in warmth.”
